Massimo Vignelli, creator and founder of Vignelli Associates based in NYC have designed some of the most recognisable classics in the world. Including the iconic identities for Knoll and American Airlines. My all time favourite piece of design is the one above, recognisable to everyone and every designer as the New York Subway map and signage system. It has become a design classic in its own right and more poignantly was refreshed by Vignelli Associates. The image above shows the previous and still beautifully designed map and the equally great and refreshed version. It really does show that your biggest competition is usually yourself, and I think Massimo has won
